The Volatility Is Too Damn High Party

www.valentineventures.com While the title of this week’s Market Message is a humorous play on "The Rent Is Too Damn High Party" (look it up on Wiki), there is no doubt that the market’s volatility in the past 4 years has got investors skittish and uncomfortable. What’s more, the frequency of large daily declines (2% or more) is somewhat unprecedented. This only further underscores the importance of having a financial plan and the proper asset allocation…..chart the course, stay the course, weather the storm. And that’s a party we can support.

How to find hot stocks (Ezine Ready)

The first thing all new investors do once they fund their account is to start looking for some stocks ideas.

Finding ideas is easy, but finding the right ideas is more difficult. A common quesiton that a new trader will have is “what stocks should I be following?”.

It is important to realize that trading and investing are different animals. If the goal is to trade, there are specific requirements you need your stock to have.

Building a list of hot stocks requires finding stocks that are widely followed, trade with a lot of liquidity, have regular news driven events and/or have options.

The easiest way to find widely followed names is to look at financial portals like Google Finance. On the front page there is a section calle “Trends” in which there are listed stocks broken into such categories as Popular, Price, Market Cap and Vol.

Popular – This filter lets you see which stocks have been most quieried through Google. If for example AAPL is the stock that majority of users have searched for, the AAPL ticker will appear. This is a good sentiment indicator that allows you to find stocks that a lot of other investors are researching.

Price – here you will find the biggest percentage gainers and losers of the day. It is not recommended to simply trade a stock because it is the biggest mover of the day, but momentum traders will often seek the high flyers to try capture some of the move. This requires a lot of skill and swift execution by your broker.

Market cap – This tab will sort the largest movers, both to the upside and downside by market cap, this refers to the size of the company. It is generally safer to trade in larger cap stocks as they are more widely followed and have a lot more liquidity, making it easier to enter and exit a trade with closer spreads between the bid and ask.

Vol – Volume leaders are the stocks or instruments like ETF’s that have the most trading volume. It is always a good idea to track the heavily traded names since they are the most widely followed and will often lead the market.

Typically just scanning the price and popular tabs will yeild the hot stocks for the day, building a list of these stocks and following the more popular names is a great strategy in learning how to identify hot stocks.
